The perfect introduction to competition - couples in Newcomers are either both complete Newcomers, or can comprise of 1 newcomer, and 1 intermediate dancer..

Competition Rules

  • The 'Newcomer' must not have competed in any major dancing competition before, except in previous newcomer categories. They must not have placed 1st in previous newcomer categories. Newcomers who placed 1st in previous newcomer competitions are encouraged to compete in the intermediate category.

  • The Intermediate Dancer must NEVER have placed 1st,2nd or 3rd in any Ceroc or Modern Jive competition at intermediate level and above (categories such as lucky dip, top cats, and Pro Am are exempt). They may have placed in a newcomers category previously.

  •  Couples will dance to music chosen by the organisers. This could be anything from the 40's to what’s in the charts today.

  •  All judging will be by a points system. Dancers are encouraged to dance to the end of their heat. Qualifying dancers will be asked back to the next round. Judges decisions are final.

  •  Points will be awarded for timing and synchronisation of dancers rather than the number/difficulty of moves.

  •  There are no additional points for dress.

  •  Airsteps, (lifts, jumps and acrobatic moves), will not be permitted. Disqualification from the competition will be automatic should a couple attempt these moves.

  •  No extra points will be awarded for drops but they will be permitted provided that the ball of one of the lady's feet remains in contact with the ground. Otherwise, the move will be defined as an airstep.

  •  Partners must not release hand hold or break contact for more than eight beats.

  •  The lead and follow aspect of the dance must clearly be demonstrated.

  •  The dance must be recognisable as a modern jive like Ceroc. (Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, 50s style Rock 'n' Roll, Ballroom Jive etc are not modern jives and therefore are not permitted.)

  •  Dance Teachers/professionals are not allowed to enter this section.

  •  Competitor couples or partnerships from the Advanced and Open ‘Dragon’ Trophy sections are not permitted to enter this section.

  •  Competitor couples can compete in the Intermediate category as well as Strictly Novice.

  •  Competitor numbers are strictly limited to 12 couples so places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

  •  CSW reserves the right to change the programme and competition if necessary without consultation.

  •  The event will be recorded by film, video and photograph; these may be used for Ceroc promotional purposes without any obligation.

  •  The organisers accept no responsibility for loss or injury to persons or possessions in relation to this event.
