Top Cats Amateur

£13 per person plus admission.

Number of places available in this category: 120 individuals (60 male / 60 female).

In this section no-one knows who their partner will be!

We aim to discover who are the best individual dancers in the amateur category (no Open level dancers or Professionals permitted).

Tops Cat's is based on the Jack & Jill concept where individuals are randomly paired in each round and judged on their dancing. It is the individuals who go through to the next round, again to be randomly paired for the next heat. This means that each entrant may have a different partner for each round.

Those that place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 2023 will be allowed to compete in the 2024 Top Cat Pro category so that you can deservedly compete against the best of the best.

The number of entries it this category is limitless but it has to be gender balanced. Each competitor will receive a dance number which has to be pinned in a place where it is VERY easy for the judges to see.

Dance Teachers/professionals and open level dancers are NOT allowed to enter this category.

This event is for over 15s only.

Competition Rules

  • Randomly allocated couples will dance to music chosen by the organisers. This could be anything from the 40's to what’s in the charts today.

  • All judging will be by a points system. Dancers are encouraged to dance to the end of their heat. Qualifying dancers will be asked back to the next round. Judges decisions are final.

  • Points will be awarded for style, innovation, musical interpretation, quality of dancing and synchronisation of dancers rather than the number/difficulty of moves.

  • Airsteps, (lifts, jumps and acrobatic moves), will not be permitted. Disqualification from the competition will be automatic should a couple attempt these moves.

  • No extra points will be awarded for drops but they will be permitted provided that the ball of one of the lady's feet remains in contact with the ground. Otherwise, the move will be defined as an airstep.

  • Partners must not release hand hold or break contact for more than eight beats.

  • The lead and follow aspect of the dance must clearly be demonstrated.

  • The dance must be recognisable as  Ceroc. Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, 50s style Rock 'n' Roll, Ballroom Jive etc are not Ceroc and therefore are not permitted.

  • Dance Teachers/professionals and open level dancers are NOT allowed to enter this category.

  • Partners will be allocated on the day.

  • Competitor numbers are strictly limited so places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

  • CSW reserves the right to change the programme and competition if necessary without consultation.

  • The event will be recorded by film, video and photograph; these may be used for Ceroc promotional purposes without any obligation.

  • The organisers accept no responsibility for loss or injury to persons or possessions in relation to this event.
